How to read the chart
The pattern is simple once you see it laid out:
- From 12:00 AM to 11:59 AM, the military hour matches the standard hour, with a leading zero for hours 1 through 9. The exception is midnight, which resets to 0000.
- From 12:00 PM to 11:59 PM, add 12 to the standard hour. 1:00 PM becomes 1300, 2:00 PM becomes 1400, and so on up to 2300.
- To convert back, subtract 12 from any military hour of 1300 or higher.
Minutes work the same in both systems
Only the hour changes between the two systems. Minutes are identical in standard and military time, so you never convert them. Just attach the minutes to the converted hour:
- 3:45 PM is 1545 (fifteen forty five)
- 9:12 AM is 0912 (zero nine twelve)
- 10:30 PM is 2230 (twenty two thirty)
- 12:07 AM is 0007 (zero zero zero seven, or just “seven minutes past midnight”)
Note that military time drops the colon: 1545, not 15:45, in strict military usage. Civilian 24 hour clocks usually show the colon, but the numbers mean the same thing.
Half hours and quarter hours
Quarter hours and half hours convert the same way as any other minutes:
- 6:15 AM is 0615 (zero six fifteen)
- 6:30 AM is 0630 (zero six thirty)
- 6:45 AM is 0645 (zero six forty five)
- 6:15 PM is 1815 (eighteen fifteen)
- 6:30 PM is 1830 (eighteen thirty)
- 6:45 PM is 1845 (eighteen forty five)
Common mistakes to avoid
- Confusing 1200 and 0000. Noon is 1200, midnight is 0000.
- Forgetting the leading zero. 7:00 AM is 0700, written as four digits.
- Converting the minutes. Minutes never change; only the hour does.
